Abstract

The growing visibility that immigrant communities have earned nowadays can be explained through the increase of space these groups are occupying inside Spanish cities. The evidence of this situation is the current proliferation of ethnic businesses, that is, diverse entrepreneurships owned by people of foreign origin. These shops are proof of the steady transformation that populations –as well as population on the territory– go through, a process that leads to a conversation about relevant issues such as integration, adaptation and coexistence with the streets as the main stage. This work takes place in the Spanish city of Pamplona, and it identifies and locates ethnic businesses with the objective of quantifying their trace on the urban landscape. Moreover, this is a step towards the main objective of this research: an analysis of the level of integration of the immigrant communities within the local society. On this work, the presented results belong to a fieldwork research based on an observation form to ethnic businesses of the fourteen neighborhoods of the city. They were obtained through a statistic analysis of the collected information. It is expected to help to characterize these businesses by the similarities and differences among them, in order to elucidate the current situation of these activities and their protagonists in the city of Pamplona.
