Abstract

This study examines how legislative power shapes and develops national identity in Asia. Utilizing the dataset from Varieties of Democracy, this study looks at cross-national trends in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines from 2012-2017. An ordinary least squares regression test within the empirical implications of theoretical models (EITM) framework shows that legislative power has a statistically significant relationship with the common good. It is also a key in developing a new understanding of nationalism in globalized democracies. Finally, the empirical implications emphasize the importance of legislative power in achieving national prosperity, security, stability, and sustainability in a democratic political system.
