Abstract

This paper will start by presenting some convergent tendencies and eclectic approaches to moral theories of secession in light of some practical application of these theories. While normative theories of secession tend to be “level-specific”, my paper will attempt to address and compare secession from and secession within the European Union. It will thus analyse the legal right to withdraw from the European Union and argue that this right to secede from the Union normalizes a right to secede from EU Member States. After exploring several arguments to distinguish these rights of exit, the paper will conclude that their regulation and qualification should not be substantially different from one another.
