Abstract

The use of non-text formats offers a variety of benefits for both instructors and students, notably in opening up new paths of understanding through the re-presentation of information in ways that stimulate reconsideration of linkages and contexts. The focus here will be on author-created images and the various ways in which these can be scaffolded into wider processes of learning. Such techniques can also be of use in communicating research findings to non-academic audiences. This presentation builds from a number of exercises and activities for both classrooms and for wider public engagement activity to demonstrate this potential and to encourage delegates to explore possibilities with their own students and research dissemination.
