Abstract

The aim of the research project is to explore teachers' conceptions of the phenomenon of antiziganism and to derive implications for inclusive citizenship education. School as a place of learning plays a key role in countering institutional racism and antiziganism, the “manifestation of individual expressions and acts as well as institutional policies and practices of marginalization, exclusion, physical violence, devaluation of Roma cultures and lifestyles, and hate speech directed at Roma as well as other individuals and groups perceived, stigmatized, or persecuted during the Nazi era, and still today, as “Gypsies‘” (German: „Zigeuner“) (IHRA 2020). The authors of the current RomnoKher education study summarise that teachers must be trained during their studies accordingly to promote the educational success of the minority of Sinti and Roma. (cf. RomnoKher 2021). At school, teachers are confronted with discriminatory and anti-democratic attitudes of their students. However, the didactic approach to counter such behaviour often varies (cf. Strauß 2011). Teachers bring their own conceptions to the classroom or are not able to recognise resentment and derogatory statements between students. Consequently, the opportunity to address and intervene is missed or resentment towards Sinti and Roma is unconsciously reinforced. The dissertation project explicitly focuses on teachers by exploring their didactic strategies and needs for action. The problem-centred, guideline-based interviews were analysed using a content-structured content analysis according to Kuckartz (cf. Kuckartz 2016). The presentation of the poster serves to display key findings of the above mentioned study discussing implications for the implementation of education on antiziganism, primarily for teacher training, in the framework of inclusive citizenship education.
