Abstract

For the past three decades it has been repeated that 'ideologies are over' or 'that we are now in the 'post-ideological phase of politics'. From the point of view of political sociology, ideologies have never gone away and do not need to return. Ideologies always exist because they are a proper aspect of social political thought. It is fair to ask the following questions: does it make sense to talk about ideologies today? If so, in what way? But weren't ideologies over? Are they not a thing of the past? Can today's politics be said to be ideological in the same way as the politics of the 20th century? And are we really witnessing the return of new political ideologies? I will offer an overview of the new sociological-political perspectives on political ideologies, starting both from a theoretical point of view and from the new trends of movements. I will focus on the main theoretical nodes, models of analysis and the distinction between ideologies and the political imaginary. Finally, I will concisely present the scenario of the new political ideologies, focusing on the distinction between progressive ideologies, such as the green ideologies of the new ecological movements, and the conservative ideologies that are emerging in the context of the affirmation of the new right-wing movements.
