Abstract

In a recent publication concerning a Text Oriented Discourse Analysis (TODA) of the UN Agenda for the SDGs (Montesano Montessori, 2023), the analyses revealed a series of problems. In many ways, the agenda still proposes economic growth – especially for poor countries, and presents a managerial approach, detached from any real context which should help to solve climate change by 2030. In this paper, I would like to test and, hopefully further elaborate, on the suggestions that I made as to how CPDA could contribute to a more appropriate take on understanding complex problems. These suggestions included: ▪️ Introducing (once again) Critical Language Awareness as well as critical thinking/analysis and ecoliteracy in curricula and to introduce CPDA at college level, so as to enrich processes of world citizenship, critical learning and successfully articulating alternative discourses ▪️ A CPDA analysis of ecological discourses, taking on board the difference between deep and shallow ecology (Naess, 1989), embodied and detached knowledge, worldviews and texts. Thorough research on UN texts, the powers behind these texts and their reception in global society should be a strong topic of research. ▪️ As for the SDGs, CPDA can develop ways in the direction of policy making. It can contribute to bridging local and global discourses so that constructive synergies can emerge. It can contribute integrating and balancing modalities of governance towards enhancing their strategic potential. CPDA can contribute to critically gauge the downside of imaginaries by revealing encountered gaps, persistent myths and by giving voice to excluded discourses. ▪️ Finally, CPDA can help lay the basis for a constructively revision of political and governance texts and practices, such as those of the UN, so that these will stand in the service of a socially and ecologically world society for ourselves and for the generations to come. I assume that this requires inserting both morality and complexity into processes of policy analysis and policy making. References: Montesano Montessori, N. (2023): Critical Policy Discourse Studies.
