Abstract

This paper explores the intricate dynamics surrounding the inclusion of intersex identities within the broader framework of LGBTI activism. Despite the commonly perceived alignment of intersex issues with the LGBTI movement, this study sheds light on the nuanced perspectives held by intersex activists themselves. Drawing upon 32 in-depth interviews conducted with intersex activists in Belgium and Germany, this research investigates the advantages and risks associated with the assimilation of intersex issues into the LGBTI umbrella. The findings reveal a spectrum of viewpoints within the intersex community, where some organizations vehemently oppose such assimilation while others advocate for it. A consensus emerges on shared risks, including a lack of knowledge about intersex issues, scarcity of funding, and the time-consuming nature of the solidarity, often detracting from the political strategy. Furthermore, the study unveils a temporal dimension in the perception of intersex activists. Initially, the relationship between intersex activists and LGBT organizations appears promising, yet over time, a growing sense of insecurity permeates, challenging the sustainability of this collaboration. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on the intersections of identities within activism, highlighting the need for a nuanced understanding of the advantages and challenges associated with the inclusion of intersex issues in broader advocacy frameworks.
