Abstract
In the context of Cameroon, like many African countries, gender and sexuality remain significant aspects of identity that influence individuals' experiences in various societal domains, including academia. However, traditional academic frameworks often fail to account for the complexities and diversity of gender and sexuality, reinforcing binary understandings and perpetuating exclusionary practices. This proposal aims to investigate intersectional approaches to gender and sexuality within the Cameroonian academic setting, acknowledging the nuances of these identities and shedding light on the challenges faced by marginalized groups. We will examine the intersectional experiences of individuals with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations, identify the barriers and challenges faced by marginalized groups in accessing education and participating fully in academic life and propose strategies and recommendations for fostering inclusivity, equity, and representation of diverse gender and sexual identities within Cameroonian academic institutions.
This study will utilize a mixed-methods research design to comprehensively explore the topic. Firstly, qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews and focus group discussions will be conducted with students, faculty members, and administrative staff from various universities in Cameroon. These interviews will provide insights into the lived experiences, challenges, and perceptions surrounding gender and sexuality within the academic context. Additionally, quantitative data will be collected through surveys distributed to a wider sample of participants, allowing for statistical analysis of the prevalence of discrimination, biases, and exclusionary practices based on gender and sexual identity.
The anticipated results of this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the intersectional experiences of individuals with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations in Cameroonian academia. The research findings will highlight the barriers and challenges faced by marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ+ individuals, in accessing education, pursuing academic careers, and fully participating in the academic community. Furthermore, the study will propose strategies, policies, and recommendations to promote inclusivity, equity, and representation of diverse gender and sexual identities within Cameroonian academic institutions, aiming to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment.
