Abstract

“This paper examines the intricate interplay between gender, power, and technology, focusing on the emergent phenomenon of algorithmic bias in online discourse. In an era where digital platforms play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and discourse, understanding the gendered implications of algorithmic systems becomes imperative. By employing a feminist lens, our research offers a nuanced analysis of the ways in which algorithms perpetuate and reinforce existing gender stereotypes and power differentials within online spaces. Furthermore, this paper proposes a theoretical framework that reconceptualizes power dynamics within digital spaces, emphasizing the need for a feminist approach to algorithmic design and governance. By interrogating the underlying assumptions and biases embedded in algorithms, we argue for the development of inclusive and equitable digital infrastructures that promote diverse voices and challenge traditional gender norms” (chatGPT 3.5 2023) This has been written by chatGPT 3.5. What the paper will really do is to reflect on feminist theory building generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the example of the chatbot ChatGPT. Research has previously pointed out the gender biases of Chat GPT and its performative construction of gender (Gross 2023). This paper will engage in the ways AI engage in theoretical assumptions about gender and the mechanisms by which such gender knowledge is made. It is argued that AI gender knowledge is based on a linear, Eurocentric and progressive understanding of gender. It is for instance proposed by Chat that “the acknowledgment and acceptance of diverse gender identities continue to evolve over time” (chatGPT 3.5 2023). In engaging in core topics of feminist theory building with the AI, this paper researches the limits and chances of AIs gender knowledge.
