Abstract

The proposed paper aims to examine the intricate landscape of asylum border procedures as an EU bordering practice that produces (im) mobility and legal (in) security. The paper will delve into the regulation of border procedures which are used as a procedural tool which aims to justify and legitimise exceptional asylum procedures at the borders and (re) bordering of external borders. It will further illustrate how the concept of the ‘border’ is strategically employed in the 2020 Pact on Migration and Asylum to uphold the responsibility of frontline member states and curb secondary movements through the expansion of border procedures. By examining border procedures as an EU practice of border governance, the paper seeks to unveil how procedural means are used at the EU’s borders to justify (im) mobility and reduced procedural safeguards, shedding light on the broader implications of such practices within the EU’s migration and asylum governance framework.
