Abstract

This study conducts a historical analysis to map climate narratives from the late 1960s to the present. The findings reveal an unprecedented map of narratives on climate change, identifying three key shortcomings that still need to be addressed in academic literature. First, there are inherent limitations to each narrative, which operate within the confines of their respective theoretical frameworks, shaped by their unique perspectives. Second, climate narratives interrelate with one another; new narratives often emerge from earlier ones, creating a continuum that interconnects them across time. This dynamic aligns closely with the three structural dimensions of narrative analysis. Third, the climate narratives identified in the map have not sufficiently integrated the perspectives of territories and cultural contexts beyond dominant Western geographies, marginalising or overlooking the voices and experiences of non-Western territories. Consequently, the cultural and socio-political conditions that shape responses to climate change remain only partially represented, limiting the comprehensiveness and inclusivity of these narratives.
