Abstract

In this paper, the point is to discuss about the effects of the EU integration process on civil society organizations (CSO). According to the Good Governance’s White Book of 2001, the CSO are on the front line of the democratization process. According to those principles, the paper proposes to analyze the interaction between the EU and CSO. The goal is to answer the question: Which are the different effects of the EU integration on the CSO? The main hypothese to discuss is the impact of the EU as a donor on the nature of CSO. The liberal paradigm of civil society seems switching into a neoliberal one. In order to answer this question, the paper is based on a study case: the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working about democratic issues in Romania. Through interviews with NGOs representatives, the goal is to point out in their discourse the evolution they describe when they talk about the EU related to civil society. The paper is about the period from the fall of Ceausescu to our days. As a main factor, I focus on funding and management to see the direct effects of the EU process on the CSO.
