Abstract

This Section addresses various aspects of the design and impact of, as well as changes in, the political and societal landscape of international bureaucracy, understood as the multitude of international or multilevel administrations within international organizations. The Section brings together a diverse set of theoretical and methodological approaches, including papers that build bridges between International Relations, Political Economy and Sociology, and Public Administration. The various Panels in this Section address questions ranging from leadership to the representative bureaucracy ('people'), from relations between member states and the administration(s) to political dynamics inside the bureaucracies and organizations ('power'), and from the efficiency and pathologies of international bureaucracies and IOs more broadly to their influence on both public policy-making and policy implementation ('performance').
