The 2025 Political Theory Prize is awarded to Bruno Leipold

The 2025 Political Theory Prize for the best first book in the field has been awarded to Bruno Leipold (London School of Economics and Political Science) for his 'brilliantly presented' work, Citizen Marx: Republicanism and the Formation of Karl Marx's Social and Political Thought (Princeton University Press, 2024).

The Political Theory Prize awards an outstanding debut book in political theory written in English. Co-sponsored by the Contemporary Political Theory journal, the prize was conceived in collaboration with our Standing Groups on Kantian Political Thought, Political Theory and International Political Theory, and the convenors of our General Conference Section on Methodology of Political Theory.

The winning book is the first book to offer a comprehensive exploration of Marx’s relationship to republicanism, arguing that it is essential to understanding his thought.

It excels both in identifying relevant fragments in Marx's works to support this core thesis, and in framing Marx's texts within an incredibly well researched outlook of the intellectual context.

In his own words
Bruno Leipold

I can’t say how thrilled and grateful I am to the ECPR jury for this honour. I hope that this recognition helps bring greater attention to the democratic republican aspects of Marx’s thought. I could never have finished the book without the support of my friends, family, and comrades, and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them again.
