About

The Standing Group on Political Theory brings together scholars with substantive research interests in political theory.  It aims to support research in all branches of political theory, including work on conceptual, historical, methodological and normative topics. It also aims to promote interactions across sub-disciplinary and methodological boundaries within political theory, and to facilitate interdisciplinary engagement between political theorists and scholars working in cognate disciplines.

The aims of the Standing Group are:

  • To facilitate electronic and other forms of communication among political theorists in Europe
  • To encourage and maintain a dialogue between national, linguistic and intellectual ‘cultures’ in political theory
  • To identify and support new avenues for research in political theory
  • To promote political theory within the political science community
  • To make itself visible in the academic community and organise regular academic events within the ECPR framework
  • To encourage collaboration among political theorists in Europe on common academic projects
  • To collaborate with other Standing Groups, especially those with related aims
Prize

The Standing Group on Political Theory elect one member to serve on the Jury for the ECPR Political Theory Prize. The prize is awarded for the best first book in political theory, published in English and within two years preceding the award year. The Political Theory Prize was conceived in collaboration with the ECPR Standing Groups on Kantian Political Thought, Political Theory and International Political Theory, along with the convenors of the ECPR General Conference Section on Methodology of Political Theory.
