Call for Associate Editors – PRX

Our Gold Open Access journal, Political Research Exchange (PRX), is seeking Associate Editors to join its team from January 2025 for a two-year renewable term.

The full team is supported by an editorial office, an online submission and peer review system, and the expertise of Taylor & Francis.

The closing date for applications is Friday 29 November 2024.

About PRX

Political Research Exchange (PRX)

Political Research Exchange (PRX) is the ECPR's first Open Access journal and offers a dynamic platform to advance research, innovation and debate across the breadth of political science. It welcomes significant theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions from all fields, including comparative politics, international politics/international relations, political communication, political sociology, political thought, public administration, and interdisciplinary work with a predominantly political dimension.

Published online with Gold Open Access and swift publication times, PRX leverages the digital format to deepen and enrich scholarly communication. With significant subsidies on normal upfront OA costs, PRX signals ECPR's commitment to forging a cogent path for the research community at this crucial juncture when academic publishing is becoming fundamentally transformed.

The PRX Editors-in-Chief are Lisa ZanottiMarta Lorimer and Steven M. Van Hauwaert.

About the role

The Associate Editors (AEs) will join the team in January 2025 or soon thereafter, for a two-year (renewable) term.

Editors-in-Chief (EiCs) make an initial assessment of submissions. These are then anonymised and allocated to AEs, who handle the review process itself. The handling AE’s identity is not made visible to the reviewer or author, the reviewer’s identity is not made visible to the author, and the author’s identity is not made visible to the reviewer or handling AE. At the end of the process, AEs make a recommendation to publish to the EiCs who make the final decision.

Associate Editor responsibilities
  • Taking editorial responsibility for research articles through the stages of desk rejection, peer review, and recommendation to publish. This includes finding and inviting reviewers and making recommendations to the EiCs following the peer-review process.
  • Providing advice on problematic articles.
  • Attending a yearly editorial Zoom meeting with the EiCs.

More generally, Associate Editors are expected to:

  • Liaise with EiCs on editorial direction and coverage.
  • Contribute to innovations aimed at increasing PRX’s impact and reach.
  • Use their networks to encourage the submission of high-quality research articles and collections to PRX.

Applicant background

This position, though rewarding, requires significant commitment. It is also important that applicants understand and are committed to the open access, triple anonymous and online-only character of the journal.

We are seeking political scientists with a PhD, and at least three years of research experience (PhD research counts as relevant experience).

Successful candidates will have, or be working towards, an established international reputation. They will be able to draw upon a wide range of contacts in Europe and beyond. Previous editorial experience is a desirable, but not essential, criterion. It is expected that AEs will come from an ECPR Member or Associate Member institution and be a member of one or more ECPR Groups and Networks.

We welcome applicants with research interests in all areas of politics but are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in international relations, political theory/philosophy, methodology, and geographical areas outside of Europe and the Americas. Please note that AEs will occasionally be expected to take responsibility for research areas beyond their specific field of expertise.
