Even though the democratic theory expects that voters are independent when they make electoral choices, the environment surrounding them has been found to systematically influence their behavior. This panel focuses on the role of political context – controversial actions of political actors, prevailing ideology among political parties, or country’s democratic tradition – and explores how these factors influence citizens’ attitudes, voting decisions, as well as turnout. Included papers utilize national or cross-sectional surveys and various experimental and quasi-experimental designs which conjointly draw a picture about the influence of political context on voters’ electoral behavior.
