Timescales and Time-Policies in Higher Education

Abstract

The university is one of the few global institutions that has defined and established its own timescales. It uses these timescales to induce social values and professional norms as well as to legitimize social stratification. Yet academic time does not only impact on society. While time in the academy is still different to time outside the academy, environmental pressures increasingly rationalize and re-structure the way academics use and understand time. Neo-liberal Globalization and the diffusion of management practices has reframed time as a linear measure of academic production: time is accelerated, and ordered in defined time-programs (degrees, PhDs, research projects): time in various forms has become a resource. A resource that does not only structures the present but reframes and impacts on the university’s future.
