Democratisation is a set of non-linear processes that can lead to both expected and unexpected outcomes. There is a variety of variables that interact to define the direction of democratisation processes. This panel has two objectives. The first is to discuss the causal influence of institutional and non-institutional variables on the democratisation process in a number of countries. First, it aims to elucidate the impact of party legislations on the democratisation processes in the Global South, particularly in the case of India. Second, it analyses how the consociational model of democracy established in Iraq and Lebanon determines the stability/instability of democracy in these countries. Third, by exploring the pathway that a social movement that resorts to online activism traveled, the panel analyses the characteristics of political participation in Nigeria. The second objective of the panel is to highlight the political effects of COVID-19 as one of the variables that determine political change, along with other typical variables such as actors, institutions, structures and decisions. In some countries, the COVID-19 crisis has accelerated pre-existing challenges to liberal democracy. In other cases, this crisis has triggered unique behavioural and institutional logics. To achieve this objective, this panel explores the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the democratisation processes in India and Ukraine.
