Abstract

This panel unpacks the domestic and supranational politics of the EU’s rule of law crisis. At the supranational level, papers evaluate the inter-institutional politics within the EU driving the use of rule of law tools and whether the use of such tools is democratically legitimate. At the domestic level, papers will probe challenges to judicial independence and the politics of rule of law backsliding in Malta, Poland, Hungary, and Spain.
