Representations of gender+, gender equality, and intersectionality concepts in surveys across time and space

Abstract

How do existing cross-national and longitudinal surveys measure the concepts of gender equality, gender+, intersectionality and fertility across various geographical locations and time periods? The papers on this panel present the results from two Horizon Europe Sister projects: Push*Back*Lash and UNTWIST as well as empirical research that relies on the assessment of survey measures. The teams have systematically gathered and evaluated survey items aimed at measuring gender+, gender equality, fertility, and intersectionality concepts in international (International Social Survey Programme and World Value Survey), European (European Values Survey, European Social Survey, and Eurobarometer), and national surveys from six countries (the UK, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, and Hungary) that span over three decades. The primary findings underscore a partial alignment between multidimensional concepts and the methods used for their measurement. Addressing these measurement gaps is important to advance survey research and empirical analysis of public attitudes on gender+ issues and intersectional inequalities.
