Abstract

Our panel explores the complex relationship of public and religious attitudes towards abortion, encompassing a diverse range of cultural, political, and religious perspectives. We bring together five insightful studies that delve into how societal norms, religious beliefs, and policy debates shape attitudes towards abortion in different geopolitical contexts. 1. Giulia Fornaro investigates the demographic, ideological, and institutional factors influencing abortion attitudes in the post-Roe United States. This study provides a nuanced understanding of how perceived public opinion shapes personal beliefs. 2. Amelie Kolandt examines the influence of Christian ethos on abortion care in Germany. Through extensive interviews with experts, this paper discusses the potential future trajectory of abortion care in the context of religious and political influences. 3. Alexa Nossek presents a vignette study examining how information and context affect the abortion attitudes of a sceptical demographic in Germany. This quantitative analysis reveals crucial turning points in opinion formation. 4. Gabriela Georgieva Pancheva focuses on Bulgaria's societal attitudes towards abortion rights, contrasting the country's legal stance with prevailing discourses of womanhood. This study is a critical inquiry into the coexistence of liberal abortion laws and conservative societal norms. 5. Danielle Pullan explores the complex interplay between foster care, abortion attitudes, and evangelical activism in the United States, offering an in-depth qualitative perspective on how these issues intersect within religious communities.
