Abstract

Since the launch of the European Universities Initiative in 2017, the alliances have not only expanded geographically but have also deepened their engagement through extensive collaboration and partnerships. This noteworthy trend holds the potential to enhance their effectiveness by improving diversification and establishing sustainable visions for their long-term goals and missions. The realization of these promises, however, is contingent upon various contextual and scope conditions, encompassing funding mechanisms, regulatory environments, and the overall trajectory of the EU integration process. The panel raises key questions regarding the actors and stakeholders involved in the expansion and consolidation of these alliances. Additionally, it seeks to explore the empirical evidence available on their collaboration and engagement, aiming to unravel the extent to which these alliances can function as a platform for promoting innovation and inclusion. Contributions to the panel address not only conceptual, theoretical, and methodological challenges but also provide concrete empirical case studies. The objective is to foster a robust exchange of ideas on the present and potential future trajectories of the European Universities Initiative alliances, bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary fields, such as political science, politics, education studies, social policy, and beyond. This interdisciplinary approach aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted aspects surrounding the European Universities Initiative, ultimately contributing to the ongoing discourse on the integration and effectiveness of these alliances within the European Union higher education landscape.
