Abstract

"Political Behavior and Representation of LGBTQ+ People: Intersectional Perspectives" is a panel that provides a comprehensive exploration of the political engagement and representation of LGBTQ+ individuals, with a focus on how their sexual orientation intersects with various socio-political and identity factors. This panel brings together diverse studies that collectively shed light on the unique challenges and evolving dynamics of LGBTQ+ political involvement. The first study analyzes the increasing trend in political candidacy among LGBTQ+ individuals in Sweden, revealing a growing propensity for political engagement, particularly within liberal and left-leaning parties. Shifting the focus to Canada, the second paper explores the marginalization and identity challenges faced by racialized LGBTQ+ Arabs. This study delves into the complexities of identity expression and community engagement within homonationalist frameworks. In France, the third paper investigates the politicization process of gay and lesbian individuals within the far-right sphere. This research uniquely explores how sexual identity intertwines with political ideologies in the context of right-wing nationalism. The fourth study examines the 2021 German federal elections to compare the voting behaviors of the LGBTIQ+ community against the general population. It highlights how intersecting identities like education, gender, and age influence political choices. The final paper challenges prevailing narratives in homonationalism by assessing LGBTQ individuals' attitudes towards Muslims and Christians/Catholics across Western democracies, presenting a new perspective on LGBTQ perspectives towards different religious groups." We are aware, that this is an almost all male panel. However, this composition was necessitated and shaped by the pool of applicants.
