A recent analysis of 99 essays on the sciences of democracies published by the Loop ECPR has shown that power, as a concept or a focal point, is neglected (Prior 2023). This neglect is surprising as half of the word "demo-cracy" is rooted in power (Prior 2023), and power is as fundamental to social sciences as energy is to physics (Russell 1938). We are, therefore, interested in panels that question the role of power in the sciences of democracies. Here are some possible questions and justifications: ▪️ What is power? This question is conceptual in nature as to how we should define power. Should we define power more generally or narrowly to political or social power? What are the similarities and dissimilarities between power and related terms, such as domination, coercion, empowerment, force, violence, influence, or resources? ▪️ What is the role of power in democratic theory? This question is about the role and methodology that power does and should play in democratic theory. ▪️ What is the role of power in democratic theorizing? This question concerns whether theorists with more power get more uptake than others, not only due to the power behind their ideas but also because of their standing, reputation, or prestige in the profession. ▪️ Are there democracies that do not use the word or sign "power" (e.g., manapori)? This question dives into non-western democracies. ▪️ Who should (or not hold) power in a democracy? ▪️ How should (or should not) power be used in a democracy? This question concerns the correct or legitimate ways that power is used (or not used) in a democracy. ▪️ Is it possible for no one to have power in a democracy? This question concerns agential vs. structural power.
