Anticipatory Democracy is a research area which addresses one of the fundamental dimensions of democracy: individual participation in the common well-being of an entire community. Born out of ideas about how to project the future onto present life and how to involve public in employing such project in the design of their near-, as well as on far future (Toffler, 1970), the very idea of the discipline of Anticipatory Democracy has been defined as “a process for combining citizen participation with future consciousness" (Bezold, 1978). Our Panel’s general research theme concerns the conceptual, deliberative, material, informational and cognitive ways, instruments, resources as well as individual, social, and political values, and emotions might employ in building up the future they want from a democratic point of view, with a special focus on anticipatory democracy as potentially supported by filmmaking, cinematography, and movie industry. The power of cinematography and its impact at societal, and political cultural layers of human society has never been fully understood as well as it has never been deeply employed in shaping the future of human society. Our research questions is about the anticipatory capabilities of cinematography to employ its basics – storytelling, image, motion, sound – as a constructive approach to the issue of desirable worlds in our hybrid environments of today and in the virtual and immersive realities of the environments of the near and far future. The Panel provides the joint proper research framework, including: (1) The Theoretical (Conceptual) Approach to Cinematography as Democracy Anticipatory Area of Research. The theoretical, applicative and creative arguments for acknowledging cinematography and filmmaking art as a powerful, complex, and rather unknown ally in our exploration of anticipatory concepts and experiments in designing the desirable futures – a basic concept in anticipatory democracy areas; (2) The social and political impact of Cinematography as anticipatory democracy research methodology and (class of) instruments. The impact of cinematography-based “would-be worlds” approach to democracy building and democracy reinforcing studies as well as in political culture studies; (3) The Call for worldwide participation in acknowledging cinematography as a means to approach anticipatory aspects in youth development areas. The call for worldwide participation to enhance the public perception of cinematography as the art of defining, designing and running some wonderful machinery of DesirableFutures-making. Cinematography, filmmaking, scriptwriting and acting schools worldwide are invited to voice their opinions, concepts, theories, and approaches to what an unbelievable anticipatory instrument cinematography could be for achieving the desirable futures and enhance youth development. Panel's research target covering extends worldwide to schools of film and political science in geopolitical and cultural areas such as Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Continental Asia, and Asia-Pacific.
