Abstract

Title – Feminist Institutionalism at 20: Looking Back, Looking forward It is 20 years since the inaugural Feminism and Institutionalism International Network (FIIN) workshop was held in Edinburgh. We were inspired by Lovenduski’s 1998 call to adapt and transform the tools of new institutionalism to study feminist struggles, globally and locally, to institutionalise norms and reforms promoting gender equality and gender justice – and the resistance to such efforts. The purpose of this roundtable discussion is two-fold: firstly, to consider progress to date in building feminist institutions in political, parliamentary, governance and administrative institutional arenas. What have been the successes and shortfalls? Secondly, the panel allows us to reflect upon the building of feminist institutionalism as a collaborative and collective intellectual and methodological endeavour, and the body of work that has been produced by FIIN members. What have been the successes and shortfalls to date? What are the challenges presented by the current ‘moment’ of omnicrisis, and democratic backsliding? Do FI tools and concepts hold up two decades on? Where next for FI and FIIN? The roundtable draws together senior, mid and early career scholars from Europe, UK and US. Areas of expertise include: quotas, political recruitment, parliaments and executives, bureaucracies, democratisation and democratic back-sliding, anti-gender movements, and political violence. Participants have developed and/or have employed key FI concepts including: informal institutions, gendered logics of appropriateness, resistance, institutional stability and change, power, critical actors, nested newness, discretion, and networks, Note to Conference Organisers: We have given an indicative list of participants, the final line up will depend on potential panelists’ other commitments, and the rules governing participation.
