Abstract

A dynamic research agenda in political science studies the evolution, sources and effects of policy preferences and policy agendas. This has crucially involved the systematic collection, coding, and analysis of a new range of time-series on public preferences, government statements, and policy outputs. The macro polity research programme, initially inspired by Stimson, Jones, Baumgartner and others, is rapidly expanding beyond the US and the UK. This panel consolidates this comparative effort, with the aim of further integrating political science and public policy research. The set of papers illustrates innovative works on public mood and agendas, including the estimation of the policy mood in new countries, the comparative analysis of the interaction between public and policy priorities, and the examination of the crucial role of the media in representing and shaping policy agendas.
