Mobilising Europe – Europe and Citizen Activism

Abstract

The EU has long attracted the attention of citizen activism ranging from organised campaigns funnelled through established NGOs to mass protests. In recent years, and particularly in the wake of the financial and other crises experienced in the EU from 2008 onwards, citizens activism that clearly addresses Europe seems to have declined. This panel will focus on more recent examples of citizen activism to examine how Europe is constructed in a range of different campaigns in light of this decline. How do citizens construct Europe as a mobilizing frame, including frames of grievance and injustice, or as target? When does citizen activism effect change in Europe, and how does this vary when activism is carried out through different means?
