Abstract

The digital transformation of the agri-food system is widely seen as a way to achieve more sustainable food production. However, the social implications of this transition have not received sufficient attention. This paper analyses how power relations and inequalities shape the digital transformation of the agri-food system and affect social and environmental sustainability, drawing on a political ecology perspective and critical data studies. The study is based on a literature review and empirical research conducted in Germany and Canada. The study shows that the digital transition in the agri-food system is influenced by structural power relations and inequalities that can hinder social and environmental sustainability, e.g. through technology development, the distribution of benefits or the discursive framing of sustainability. It is therefore necessary for policy makers to carefully consider the social and environmental implications of digital transformation. The study raises important questions about the role of current agricultural and digital policies in addressing the challenges of this transformation. It highlights the need for policies that promote equity and sustainability, and for further research on the social implications of the digital transformation of the agri-food system.
