Updated: We stand with Ukraine

Updated Tuesday 15 March 2022
Russian membership now suspended

As part of ECPR's response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, our Executive Committee has made the extraordinary decision, at its spring meeting last week, to suspend our Russian institutional members, with immediate effect.

Any new membership applications from Russian institutions will also not be considered.

As a result of this, for the foreseeable future, scholars affiliated with the following institutions will no longer have access to ECPR membership benefits:

  • National Research University, Higher School of Economics – HSE
  • St Petersburg State University

Those participating in our forthcoming activities and events will now be regarded as non-members, and will therefore be subject to non-member participation fees.

The Official Representatives of the impacted institutions have been informed accordingly.

Statement as of Thursday 10 March 2022
Tragically, today the citizens of Ukraine enter the third week of the brutal Russian invasion.

As we witness a sovereign nation descend deeper into a widespread humanitarian crisis, our Executive Committee (EC) has made it a priority for its meeting in Colchester today to establish ways in which we can provide support.

Following an extensive discussion, the EC has agreed on steps to be taken in relation to our Russian membership. We will be reaching out to the Official Representatives of our affected Member institutions shortly to further clarify the decision made.

The EC has also considered, and are working on soliciting, practical and financial help that we can offer in the short-term and long-term – both independently and in collaboration with our partners.

Finally, we will be temporarily incorporating the national colours of Ukraine into our logo as a symbol of solidarity.

We continue to stand firmly with the people of Ukraine and call upon the academic community to speak up against this cruel attack on sovereignty and democracy.

Please continue to monitor our website and social media for further updates on our strategy to support this crisis.
