Getting there

If you can, please consider travelling to Belgium by train.

When arranging travel and accommodation, please ensure that your booking is refundable. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance. ECPG is not liable for reimbursing the cost of travel or accommodation made by participants.

Ghent does not have its own airport, but is very easy to reach from the two main airports in Belgium (Brussels Airport and Brussels South Charleroi Airport), with daily flights from/to within and outside Europe. The three other Belgian airports (Ostend, Antwerp and Liège) also provide flights to and from various European destinations.

Ghent is approximately 45 minutes away from Brussels Airport, Belgium’s national airport in Zaventem. The airport has its own railway station, Brussels-Airport-Zaventem, which offers a direct connection to Ghent. The railway station is situated beneath the airport and can be reached via the lifts and escalators in the arrivals hall. The fare is €17.80. Find more information here.

Brussels South Charleroi airport is at a 70 minutes’ drive from Ghent. A shuttle bus drives from the airport of Charleroi to Bruges via Ghent nine times a day. The bus will take you to the railway station Gent-Sint-Pieters. You can find out more here

Taxi services (prices ranging from €80.00 to €120.00) are also available in front of the airport buildings. A wide range of rent-a-car service providers can be found at the airports as well.

Ghent has two railway stations: Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort. There are train connections from all Belgian cities to the main station Gent-Sint-Pieters. Coming to Belgium via the European high-speed train network, a fast connection to Ghent with a short transfer in Brussels-South, Antwerp or the French Lille can be used

More information can be found here.

Getting around

Public transport in the city is well-organized, with an extensive network of tram and bus lines. From early in the morning to late at night, buses and trams take you to every possible destination in and around Ghent. Find a helpful route planner here.

Ticket shops for public transportation can be found at the Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station and Korenmarkt. Contactless payment on the buses and trams is possible with your debit card, smartphone or smartwatch. You just have to hold your card or device in front of the white terminal. One ride costs €2.50. Within the hour, you can take any bus or tram you like free of charge.

The centre of Ghent provides numerous possibilities for finding a vacant taxi. Taxis are waiting for you at the Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort train stations, and at many other strategic locations around the city. The taxis listed below charge fixed prices (basic fare: €10.00; price per km: €2.60; night fare: €3.00), which can also be found on the price list posted at a visible spot inside the taxi. Taxis not operating from a taxi stand determine their own prices and are not bound by the fixed fares

There are many organisations in the city from which you can rent bikes. The bike point ‘De Fietsambassade’ is located next to Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station. The webshop of de Fietsambassade allows you to quickly rent the ideal bicycle. Choose the date when you want to rent a bike and the bike point where you want to pick up your bike, and pay online.
