Abstract

Leiza Brumat, EURAC Feline Freier, Universidad del Pacífico Victoria Finn, European University Institute Abstract: This webinar focuses on displaced people and the migrant-refugee binary classification. We will discuss receiving countries' migration governance in terms of their policy reactions via, for example, temporary versus permanent visas, legal statuses, access to rights, and regularization routes. We will draw on the Venezuelan displacement crisis and how neighboring countries have reacted, and how this has affected regionalism. Through a comparative lens, we will also parallel Venezuelan displacement with so-called ‘immigration crises’ in Europe. The discussion stems from the speakers' numerous academic publications on the topic, including a recent Special Issue in International Migration, fieldwork done as part of the ASILE project, and a draft presented at the ECPR 2022 General Conference, on a panel endorsed by the Standing Group on Migration and Ethnicity.
