Abstract

Papers in this panel examine the development of European Union's Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) towards financial markets. The vulnerability was made clear following the financial crisis of 2008-2009. Papers in this panel examine the design of EMU and the asymmetric set up of EMU. The papers also examine the relationship between states and financial markets, including the role of private actors, central banks and macroprudential regulators. Issues that are taken up are the interaction between regulatory state and inventionalist policy instruments in EU economic governance and implications for a more proactive role for the states, as well as questions around legitimacy, accountability and oversight.
