Abstract

Citizens’ commitment to democratic principles has long been regarded as crucial for the stability and long-term survival of democracy. Yet many democracies around the world are facing mounting challenges like political apathy, illiberal tendencies, and electoral support for candidates that aim to dismantle core features of democracy. In addition, the structure and meaning of concepts like political trust and democratic values are far from uniform across citizens, making it difficult to gauge citizen support for democracy. Contributions in this panel tackle the breadth and depth of democratic attitudes, the conditions under which they emerge and sustain, as well as their consequences for political behavior.
