Electoral Systems and Elections

Abstract

The first two papers in this panel are focused on electoral laws/systems. First, there is a paper, based on an analysis of village elections in India, that examines how ballot access laws, and their application, have a disproportionality negative impact on marginalised groups. Second, there is a paper that deploys cross-national data to revisit a long-established argument about the impacts of electoral systems, finding that actually they do not matter as much as it often argued. The final paper focuses on electoral turnout, using cross-national data sets on elections in European democracies to examine the impact of party system fragmentation on voter turnout.
