Session 3

Abstract

The first part of the session will address the use of games and gamification practices both – in an in-class and take-home experiences. The teaching is set within different Universities’ environment and the focus groups in question are graduate and postgraduate students. Our speakers will present real-time cases of implementing various game design elements and game elements in both regular and voluntary classes and attempt to understand whether one can effectively apply these elements during regular classes and mid-term or end-of-the-year exams. The second part of the session will address two analogue game-based learning tools used to teach democracy in higher education. On one hand, a custom-built card game on democracy (students as players), on the other hand, a routine to develop thematically anchored board game prototypes with students (students as designers). Our speakers will present results from a controlled comparison of these tools with the classic teaching format, undertaken in the winter term 2018/2019 at the University of Frankfurt to critically assess the learning effects of these tools on different dimensions of intrinsic motivation (enjoyment, agency, competence, and pressure).
