Abstract

WE WELCOME ALL PANEL AND PAPER PROPOSALS ON PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION. BELOW ARE SOME SPECIFIC IDEAS FROM THE SECTION CHAIRS. This section covers topics related to the broad theme of public administration and democracy. It aims to attract young scholars whose interests lie in exploring the link between the practices of public administration and the ideals of democratic and diverse society. Submissions welcomed by this section examine the issues and challenges of reconciling effective administrative arrangements with the central tenets of democracy in Western liberal states as well as in newly democratizing societies. Panelists are invited to submit empirical as well as theoretical work that addresses questions about the changing mix of arrangements for governing contemporary societies through various modes of governance, and the implications of these changes in public management for the idea of democracy. This section welcomes contributions from any sub-field of public administration that may deal with a wide variety of functional topics related to the operation of public sectors around the world. Some of the topics for panels proposed by the section chair include: (1) The ideas of state and democracy in the age of public governance; (2) Citizen engagement, participatory governance, the third sector, and co-production of public services; (3) New Public Governance and the challenges of democratic accountability; (4) Local governance and democratic politics; (5) The role of civil service in democratic governance; (6) Management of public affairs and social justice; (7) The role of democratic values in public management reform; (8) Public governance in democratizing and developing societies; (9) Public administration reform, good governance, and international democracy assistance.
