Introducing our 2023 Rising Star

We are delighted to announce that our Rising Star Award 2023 has been awarded to Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte of the University of Southampton.

Established as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, our Rising Star Award aims to:

  • recognise outstanding early career scholars;
  • honour their achievements;
  • provide the opportunity to develop their network and skills even further with ECPR support.

We have created this short video with the Jury chair Amy Verdun and Stuart’s nominator, Markus Wagner, to celebrate Stuart’s achievement and to share his work with our community. Congratulations!

About our winner

Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte is an Associate Professor in Quantitative Political Science at the University of Southampton. He received his PhD in Political Science in 2020 from King’s College London under the supervision of Prof. Christel Koop. His thesis, examined by Sara Hobolt of The London School of Economics and Political Science, UK and Ignacio Sánchez-Cuenca of Carlos III-Juan March Institute of Social Sciences, Spain, explored the consequences of European economic intervention on domestic politics in EU member states.

Stuart’s work lies at the intersection of comparative politics, political economy, and political behaviour. In his current research, he investigates far-right party success, political & social identities, and LGBTQ+ behaviour. His most recent research has been published in the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Politics.

Stuart, the first in his family to go to university, is very proudly a first-generation scholar and is an advocate for diversifying the voices represented within political science. In particular, he is passionate about the inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals across the intersection of non-privileged backgrounds and is also a champion of normalising open transparency about depression and anxiety, as well as mental health more generally, within academia.

He is currently an Associate Editor at both Public Opinion Quarterly and the European Journal of Politics and Gender.

In his own words

I’m both shocked and delighted to be honoured with this prestigious prize. I’m genuinely humbled that the prize committee considered me to be a Rising Star - imposter syndrome is real!
