ECPR statement on the future of CEU

In response to recent developments at CEU, Budapest, the ECPR Executive Committee have issued the following statement on behalf of the organisation:

CEU 'forced out' of Hungary

'The ECPR is gravely concerned at recent developments in the situation of the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. Carefully tailored regulations issued by the Hungarian government have made it impossible for the CEU to continue to offer US-accredited degrees in the country. In this way, the CEU has been forced to move these programmes from Budapest to a new venue in Vienna. This amounts to a violation of academic freedom which the ECPR strongly condemns. The ECPR has a special relationship with the CEU because the ECPR Methods Summer School has been organised and held there since 2016. The ECPR has every intention of keeping its Summer School at the CEU in Budapest until completion of the current contract, and expresses its solidarity with the CEU, a University whose reputation for high quality teaching and research in political science (and other disciplines) is widely recognised.'
