Vacancy - Co-Editor of the Political Data Yearbook (PDY)

About the Yearbook

Published in association with the ECPR’s flagship journal, the European Journal of Political Research (EJPR), the Political Data Yearbook (PDY) contains comprehensive and authoritative data and analysis of electoral results, national referenda, changes in government, and institutional reforms for a range of OECD countries, within and outside the EU.

Its online version, the PDY:Interactive (PDYi) is a unique data source building on the PDY content, which is freely available to the profession. PDYi provides the data in a fully searchable and downloadable format, making it an invaluable tool to those working in this area.

The current editorial team comprises Andreas Bågenholm (University of Gothenburg), Liam Weeks (University College Cork) and Thomas Mustillo (Purdue University).

About the role

Currently, the work of the three editors is split, with two taking responsibility for the narrative and analysis, (where one is primarily responsible for editing the text and one for checking the accuracy of the tables) and one for the database and the development of the PDY:i

We are seeking an editor to take on the first task, i.e. the responsibility for the main text. The role involves:

  • Recruiting authors when a current author (for various reasons) has to be replaced or when a new country is added;
  • Ensuring that each entry is accurate, in clear and grammatical English, and includes all of the required elements;
  • Working with the authors to resolve any ambiguities or inconsistencies in the reports;
  • Writing the editors’ introduction to each volume, highlighting common trends and important issues;
  • Working with authors to ensure correct translation of tabular data into the database format used in the PDY:Interactive website; and
  • Ensuring that the manuscript is within the page budget and delivered to the publisher by the production deadline.

Person specification

The ECPR is seeking an energetic political scientist with a strong research background on political parties and governments in the European and advanced industrial democracy context. You should, ideally, have some experience of the international publishing industry, either as an editor or author. If English is not your first language, a high proficiency in written English is essential.

To be eligible to apply, you must be affiliated with an ECPR member or Associate Member institution, or an institution which is committed to joining the ECPR for at least the duration of the Editorship. Find out here whether your institution is a current member.

We welcome applications from all sections of the political science community, and encourage people to apply irrespective of their race, gender, marital status, age, disability, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.

The successful applicant will receive an annual editorial fee and a fund to cover travel expenses incurred in attending meetings related to the journal.

Term and application process

The role is for six years, starting 1 January 2018, with a review by the ECPR Publications Subcommittee at the mid-point in 2020.

To apply, email your full CV, along with a covering letter explaining how you would develop the publication under your editorship, to ECPR Communications Manager Rebecca Gethen at rgethen@ecpr.eu.

Closing date is Monday 13 November 2017.

For further information about the role, applicants may email either Rebecca Gethen or the current editors. Find PDY editors' contact details here
